Company Overview

Climeworks captures carbon dioxide from the air with commercial carbon removal technology. The company specialises in direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) technology, which removes unavoidable and historic CO2 from the air.

Climework's Impact

Their direct air capture (DAC) technology is one of the key technological solutions to fight climate change. It captures CO₂ directly from the air, reducing the atmospheric concentration of CO₂ by only using renewable energy, energy-from-waste, or other waste heat as energy sources.

Climework's Core Mission and Values

High quality:

Their carbon removal via DAC+S is safe and permanent — the CO₂ is stored underground for over 10,000 years. It's also 100% additional and measurable, as we remove net CO₂ from the atmosphere and can precisely measure it.

Verification:

At Climeworks, they believe the carbon removal industry should be held to the highest standards, and they want to lead by example. That's why the carbon removal service performed at our Orca plant is third-party verified.

Expertise and scalability:

They operate the world's largest commercial DAC+S facility. With over 120,000 hours of operational experience across different climatic conditions, they are experts in what they do, and their modular and land-efficient technology is highly scalable.

Use of Funds Raised

Climeworks will use the funds to build a 40,000-ton capture plant in the next three years, according to CEO Christoph Gebald. The goal is to capture more than a million tons of CO₂ a year by 2030.

Risks associated with Climeworks

The latest climate science indicates that such efforts will not be enough to keep temperature rise below 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), which would prevent the worst impacts of climate change.Direct air capture uses a lot of power. Let's say the U.S. transferred all the electricity it currently generates to DAC. We would still only capture a quarter of our annual emissions. The technology's high energy needs could lead to a lot of climate pollution — more than it can remove. However the company will be using a source of renewable energy to mitigate these effects.

How are Climeworks driving innovation?

First up, the most important thing we can do in our daily lives and business practices is to reduce our carbon emissions. But the science is clear: to keep global temperatures below 1.5°C, we must also actively remove carbon dioxide from the air. More specifically, we need to extract billions of tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere between now and 2050.

That’s where Climeworks carbon removal technology, direct air capture and storage (DAC+S), comes in. Carbon removal is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and locking it away, so it can no longer contribute to global warming.
